Our Story
Earth Sea Sky was formed in December 1990 when David teamed up with clothing designer, Sydney Mulligan. Between them they had more than 25 years experience in New Zealand’s outdoor clothing industry. This experience in design, production and sales was used to fill a growing need in the market for outdoor clothing that combined comfort, style and performance. David and Sydney introduced designs and colours that linked function and performance with great fit, attention to detail and fashion. Their first range of 20 garments included tramping jackets, oilskins, waterproof ski wear, 60/40 anorak windshells and Polartec thermal fleeces.
Since then, most of New Zealand’s outdoor clothing brands have taken their production offshore. Earth Sea Sky is committed to remaining New Zealand made. The Ellis family believes this is vital in maintaining the brand’s consistent quality and uniqueness.

I have had these for many years now. I’m coming back for my second (third?) order. I buy the charcoal ones, which are great for looking good and staying cool. I love the stretch. I never like to compromise comfort and fit over looks and with these I don’t have to. Even after years of use I still don’t have to wear a belt with them. The rest of the garment stretches a bit over time and fades a bit, but is definitely still wearable. I just buy a new pair for “good” and continue to use the old ones for casual wear. I prefer the front pocket style of the Prolite Trouser (bigger) but these look smarter. Did I mention they are cool to wear? I live in a hot, dry climate (40+C in summer) and these are perfect. But I can also combine with thermal long johns for winter. If I could have the perfect pants I would also want them to be ember-proof for when I am around the fire, but you can’t have everything and i’m fine with that.

I really like these jeans. I bought two of these approximately 10 years ago to go travelling through Europe. They were the perfect choice. I cut one pair down into shorts (I dont think prolite shorts were available then). They performed amazingly well especially in hot weather (44 degree C temperatures), and they did not make me sweat. The lycra allows them to stretch a little when bending etc making them very very comfortable. I use them as every-day wear, and also use them dancing and they hold up to physical activity superbly even when temperatures are uncomfortably hot. These are definitely my go-to travel and general use trousers. After years of use, the lycra appears to have relaxed, so are a little baggier than when were new. I have never considered this a problem, and as with the classic long sleeve shirt, I would buy again in a heartbeat.
