Our Story
Earth Sea Sky was formed in December 1990 when David teamed up with clothing designer, Sydney Mulligan. Between them they had more than 25 years experience in New Zealand’s outdoor clothing industry. This experience in design, production and sales was used to fill a growing need in the market for outdoor clothing that combined comfort, style and performance. David and Sydney introduced designs and colours that linked function and performance with great fit, attention to detail and fashion. Their first range of 20 garments included tramping jackets, oilskins, waterproof ski wear, 60/40 anorak windshells and Polartec thermal fleeces.
Since then, most of New Zealand’s outdoor clothing brands have taken their production offshore. Earth Sea Sky is committed to remaining New Zealand made. The Ellis family believes this is vital in maintaining the brand’s consistent quality and uniqueness.

After wearing everywhere as my favourite jacket with its handy pockets my backpacks finally wore out the shoulder area and was delighted to see I can buy a replacement. Thanks Earth Sea Sky.

Bought this jacket in New Zealand in 2007. Still have it and wear it in 2021. Super jacket!

I’ve only just worn this jacket out now, 15 years after I purchased it. It was my go to jacket for virtually everything, and was the first thing packed when heading away due to it packing down well, its showerproof shell and the fact that it is windproof. The high collar is great, and with a thick polarfleece vest on as well it was a great warm and windproof combo under my motorcycle jacket in winter. I’m glad to see the design hasn’t changed and I’ll be getting another one. Well done ESS team.

I wear this jacket on filming shoots in all sorts of conditions inside and out. When we’re filming, there’s not a lot of time to switch clothing between the elements. I may be filming in an office one minute and then a -35 degree freezer the next!
This jacket looks professional and comes with minimal branding making it versatile for the locations we film at. I’ve also used it as a shell layer on numerous New Zealand walks. With two layer underneath it was ideal to put on for the final ascent of Roy’s Peak in Queenstown when the wind chill was really hurting some less prepared climbers.
