Our Story
Earth Sea Sky was formed in December 1990 when David teamed up with clothing designer, Sydney Mulligan. Between them they had more than 25 years experience in New Zealand’s outdoor clothing industry. This experience in design, production and sales was used to fill a growing need in the market for outdoor clothing that combined comfort, style and performance. David and Sydney introduced designs and colours that linked function and performance with great fit, attention to detail and fashion. Their first range of 20 garments included tramping jackets, oilskins, waterproof ski wear, 60/40 anorak windshells and Polartec thermal fleeces.
Since then, most of New Zealand’s outdoor clothing brands have taken their production offshore. Earth Sea Sky is committed to remaining New Zealand made. The Ellis family believes this is vital in maintaining the brand’s consistent quality and uniqueness.

I like shorts that are short.
The Taslan Shorts are too long, hence the 4 star rating.

I’m instructing outdoors all year round and these are my favourite shorts. The design is perfect, the taslan fabric is super tough, they clean and dry easily. They’re pretty much good for everything – sailing, bush, PT, yoga, running, swimming, yard work or kicking back at home or the beach. I’m going to let all my other shorts die and just keep several pairs of these in my quiver.

I bought these shorts 12 months ago and there are without doubt the favourite piece of clothing I have.
They are incredibly comfortable and practical. I have worn them tramping, canoeing, running, cycling, on the beach and around town. They are hard-wearing, light, quick drying and the pockets are very useful.
This was the first product I have bought from ESS but it certainly wasn’t my last based on the outstanding performance of these shorts. I have barely being out of these shorts for 12months and I am still amazed by how brilliant they are .

Initially, the price almost dissuaded me from purchasing these shorts. But after taking the plunge, and giving my first pair of Taslan shorts a fair flogging for a year, I can honestly say they are worth every cent. They dry ridiculously quick, (seriously, blink and you will miss it) and are far more durable than the fabric weight would suggest. I have worn them though scrub, sliding down rocks and scree, and there isn’t even a loose thread. When the team at Earth Sea Sky say ‘super durable’ they mean it. Also, the pockets are almost perfect, roomy, but they don’t flap around when you have them full, overall, a really well designed and even better made piece of kit.
So if you are still kicking round the hills in some tatty old cotton rugby shorts, shout yourself some Talsan shorts, you will not regret it.

These shorts are perfect. I wear them pretty much everyday, anywhere, beach, farm, or city. They’re comfy, tough as nails, and practical. The zip-up pocket is just the right size for a phone and keys, and gives you one less thing to worry about. They dry quick, and fit well. I’ve got no worries about this pair wearing out, yet I’ll probably be picking up another colour soon because they’re just that good

Having a purple pair of super-stubbies that matches my legionnaire hat… Heaven. These shorts are excellent for running, climbing, partying, travelling, and generally showing you mean business. Quick dry, easy to wash, durable, with the best pockets. Bought a pair for my Mum, they are so good.

I wore these almost everyday for 2 months whilst journeying from London to Mongolia to raise money for The Yellow Eyed Penguin Trust. I would have worn them everyday except in Iran it was not culturally sensitive to be wearing stubbies. They are tough and dry really fast. Great for tramping, swimming, being outside, being inside, showing off your legs and walking foreign cities. The internal zip up pocket is just big enough for a kiwi passport, or a Galaxy S10+. It’s nice knowing that no matter how active you are, your valuables will remain safe in your pocket. These are my new favourite pair of shorts and I wear them every opportunity I get.
