Earth Sea Sky was formed in December 1990 when David teamed up with clothing designer, Sydney Mulligan. Between them they had more than 25 years experience in New Zealand’s outdoor clothing industry. This experience in design, production and sales was used to fill a growing need in the market for outdoor clothing that combined comfort, style and performance. David and Sydney introduced designs and colours that linked function and performance with great fit, attention to detail and fashion. Their first range of 20 garments included tramping jackets, oilskins, waterproof ski wear, 60/40 anorak windshells and Polartec thermal fleeces.
Since then, most of New Zealand’s outdoor clothing brands have taken their production offshore. Earth Sea Sky is committed to remaining New Zealand made. The Ellis family believes this is vital in maintaining the brand’s consistent quality and uniqueness.

This has become by go-to base layer for almost every trip (everything except the hottest summer days, when I use the silk weight tops). The versatility of this thing blows me away. With the zip undone and the sleeves pulled up when grunting up a hill, it wicks sweat away effectively enough that I don’t overheat. Cooling down? Sleeves down, zip up, hood on – so much warmth appears out of nowhere. And extremely warm when worn beneath a lightweight second layer. A very lightweight garment for something that does so much.

Supremely versatile base layer. Light and breathable for high output activities up the hills (thank you power grid and the 3/4 zip!). When not moving so fast, just zip up, add a wind/water proof layer, put the hood on, and it is super toasty. Think about downsizing for a tighter, athletic fit. My go-to layer for alpine endeavours and rescue work. Also great for travelling in variable temperature conditions due to its packability. Top piece of gear.
