Our Story
Earth Sea Sky was formed in December 1990 when David teamed up with clothing designer, Sydney Mulligan. Between them they had more than 25 years experience in New Zealand’s outdoor clothing industry. This experience in design, production and sales was used to fill a growing need in the market for outdoor clothing that combined comfort, style and performance. David and Sydney introduced designs and colours that linked function and performance with great fit, attention to detail and fashion. Their first range of 20 garments included tramping jackets, oilskins, waterproof ski wear, 60/40 anorak windshells and Polartec thermal fleeces.
Since then, most of New Zealand’s outdoor clothing brands have taken their production offshore. Earth Sea Sky is committed to remaining New Zealand made. The Ellis family believes this is vital in maintaining the brand’s consistent quality and uniqueness.

The Flash pants are a fantastic multi use pant. They’re hard wearing and extremely comfortable. I spent 8 days throughout the Southern Alps pushing these pants through wind, snow and damp conditions. They performed flawlessly. They sit nicely on the waist are comfortable for prolonged periods of time with a heavy pack on. Often I’d get my thighs damp from pushing through wet scrub however the pants dried quickly. Theyre a slightly tapered fit which I really like. You can easily wear these out to dinner in town! A must have item from ESS.

These pants are perfect for travel and activities where pants are required. I find these pants remarkably warm for how light the material is, almost too warm for humid climates such as the jungles in Brazil but perfect for destinations like British Columbia, New Zealand and the like. In saying that, they’re good at wicking moisture, can take some rough treatment and did perform well in Brazil. Another good thing is that these trousers are tidy and can double as acceptable urban clothing, much like most ESS gear. A fundamental part of a travellers/outdoor-persons kit.
