The ultralight, wind resistant, thermally efficient Alpha Hoodie heralds a new era for mid-layer garments. It uses a combination of two technical fabrics, a Japanese woven, air permeable/wind resistant, nylon outer and a USA knitted Polartec® Alpha®, polyester liner.

The Alpha® Fabric was created for the special armed forces wanting breathability and reliable warmth during their start-stop physical activities in a wide variety of temperature extremes. Polartec® Alpha® attaches resilient loft fibres to a durable mesh core to create a heat capturing string singlet like fabric.
For the past 3 decades standard double sided brushed polar fleece fabric has been the performance mainstay for a mid-layer. Renowned for its breathability, warmth and fast drying performance the Alpha Hoodie surpasses these properties improving lightness, wind resistance, and compressibility in storage.

Importantly the Alpha Hoodie when worn under a waterproof/breathable outer layer will not hinder its breathability. The wearer remains comfortable and dry with no moisture build in the underlying base and mid-layers no matter the wearers physical activity.

The versatility of the Alpha Hoodie is unmatched. It can be used as a mid-layer garment under a waterproof/breathable outer garment or, in dry conditions, as a multipurpose all-in-one outer layer.

After using the Alpha jacket for a while now I am comfortable to rate it as the single best mid-weight layer I own. On cold, windy days it is fine over a single base layer when moving, staying warm without overheating. It is also a great layer under a shell, however I have used it in light rain and stayed warm and dry. The hood can fit over a helmet if required without being too bulky and I sometimes do not now carry a beanie as the hood is also warm by itself.
ESS have knocked it out of the park with this jacket.

Great versatile top, I use it walking on the mountain or early morning walking to work. The insulation is amazing, too warm for summer but now in winter and I don’t go anywhere without it. Crunches down in my rucksack to a tiny space compared to other similar warmth outers. The wind stop is also excellent, so if it’s not raining this is all you need. I’ve had it up walking on Mt Taranaki in -5c no issues.

I would give this top a higher rating if I could.

This has been a game changer for me and have replaced any down/synthetic insulation i use.
Amazing warmth for the weight and it dries and breathes like nothing else.
