Layering Continued…Outer Layer Part 2

Last newsletter introduced the waterproof (protective) layer. David continues:

“Waterproof/breathable jackets are generally referred to as 2, 2.5, or 3-layer.

In a 3-layer system:

  • Layer 1 (outer) – The face fabric that carries the water-repellent finish
  • Layer 2 (middle) – The waterproof/breathable membrane or coating
  • Layer 3 (inner) – Mesh layer that protects the waterproof barrier

At Earth Sea Sky, we mostly use 3-layer fabrics sourced from Japan. We’ve found them unsurpassed for general outdoor use. The inner mesh – layer 3 – is critical for protecting the waterproof/breathable layer from contamination and wear.

Waterproof vs Water-Repellent – Terms Often Confused

Waterproof: This is the role of the waterproof membrane which keeps all water out. For a garment to be fully waterproof, all external stitching must be seam-sealed.

Note: If a garment is referred to as “Critically seam sealed” only some seams are sealed – usually around the neck and shoulders. These garments have unsealed seams that will leak, so the garment is not fully waterproof. All Earth Sea Sky waterproof garments are fully seam-sealed.

The condition of waterproof coating or laminate is critical. Once it begins to degrade, the jacket will not be waterproof and cannot be repaired.

Water-repellent: A surface treatment applied to the outer fabric to ensure water beads off. It’s job is to keep the fabric’s outer surface as dry as possible so the waterproof/breathable layer breathes to its maximum ability. The treatment is referred to as Durable Water Repellancy (DWR).
When the outer layer becomes saturated, breathability drops and moisture builds up inside. People often mistake a a wet inner jacket for a leak, but it’s often just the result of reduced breathability.

Water repellency can be restored, though it’s difficult to return it to its original factory finish.
