Layering Explained with David Part Two: Insulation Layers

Last time we covered base layers. Next, the insulation layer (more commonly known as the mid layer).

David explains how we approach this at Earth Sea Sky:

The best outdoor thermal insulation for physically active wearers is a layer that’s bulky, lightweight, quick-drying, and allows body moisture from the base layer to pass through it. Bulk is essential as it slows the movement of air and holds on to your body warmth, and lightness is an essential attribute for efficient outdoor adventuring. Not holding moisture is necessary to maximise the breathability of your waterproof/breathable outer layer. The best fabric that still ticks all these boxes is brushed polyester, polar fleece:

  • bulky and light
  • fleece only absorbs 3% of its weight in moisture. Wool, as a natural fibre absorbs 60-80% of its weight in moisture, down, the ultimate insulation is very light and bulky, but it loses its warmth quickly when it absorbs moisture, as little as 10% moisture content can reduce its insulation properties 50%, and when soaked it has no insulation properties at all.
  • polar fleece does not hold onto its moisture and is up to 3x warmer than the same weight of a wool garment
  • extremely durable, quality polar fleece has been known to keep performing for 25+ years

Polar fleece was developed in the USA by Malden Mills back in the 1980’s.  We continue to use their USA made Polartec® fabrics  due to the fabric’s performance, durability and exceptional quality.

EXPERIENCE OUR RETRO INSULATION

Feel the efficiency of a fleece layer.  The Highfalutin is constructed from 100% recycled polyester. It has a hard wearing jersey knit outer surface and a warm, brushed fleece backing.
