Our Story
Earth Sea Sky was formed in December 1990 when David teamed up with clothing designer, Sydney Mulligan. Between them they had more than 25 years experience in New Zealand’s outdoor clothing industry. This experience in design, production and sales was used to fill a growing need in the market for outdoor clothing that combined comfort, style and performance. David and Sydney introduced designs and colours that linked function and performance with great fit, attention to detail and fashion. Their first range of 20 garments included tramping jackets, oilskins, waterproof ski wear, 60/40 anorak windshells and Polartec thermal fleeces.
Since then, most of New Zealand’s outdoor clothing brands have taken their production offshore. Earth Sea Sky is committed to remaining New Zealand made. The Ellis family believes this is vital in maintaining the brand’s consistent quality and uniqueness.
Dave –
I’ve had my Spoke jacket for 20 years and given it heaps of abuse. Originally I used it as a super lightweight rain jacket (and the only waterproof layer I took) for travelling in Asia. The DWR beading was really effective. Then for the rest of its life it has been my go-to for running in drizzle because it is so breathable, or carrying on mountain bike rides in my bumbag or backpack. It’s a super light layer for if it starts to get cold, windy or wet and takes up no room if it’s not needed. Surprisingly it is a very strong fabric, I’ve had lots of bike crashes into bushes and onto gravel, and it only had one hole that needed stitching. I thoroughly recommend you go out and thrash it!

Had mine for over a year now, use it mainly for mountain biking. It’s the bees knees, folded up it fits in your bike shorts pocket, and when the temperature drops or rain comes, you can wip it out in seconds and your straight back to enjoying your ride.

Amother great ESS product
I purchased this jacket at lunchtime, by the end of the day it was raining…so I got to test it in the rain. I have the bright yellow one…great for visibility on the bike. I popped it on and set off home on my bike. It is feather light, handy pocket on the front for popping my sunglasses in.
As I rode home, my trousers and shoes got soaked in the rain, my upper body was completely dry. It gave me great wind protection and is so breathable, whilst still keeping me bone dry. thanks ESS.. Love your work!
