Layering Explained with David Part One: Base Layers
When we move, adventure and explore – our bodies typically work up a little moisture. Managing moisture is key to keeping dry and comfortable. But with so many base layers on the market, how do you know where to start?
David explains how we approach this at Earth Sea Sky.
“All our base layers use a bi-component polyester fabric from Polartec®. The fabric is a combination of two different yarn constructions filament and spun. Both yarns are engineered to perform differently. Here’s what I mean:
FILAMENT YARN
Filament yarn is on the inside surface and is in contact with the wearer’s skin. It is hydrophilic to give good wicking properties.
SPUN YARN
The outside surface has the hydrophobic spun yarn designed to pick up the moisture and then spread it. During active wear the inside surface dries quickly, which means the wearer reduces all heat loss from conduction. On the outside surface the spun yarn spreads the moisture over a wide surface area to dry the fabric faster.”

The wicking and moisture dispersion properties in our base layers are inherent physical properties of the fabric and will keep performing the lifetime of the garment. Many outdoor companies try to replicate this by adding surface treatment’s after the fabric’s construction. These treatments are not permanent and wash out long before the garment’s lifespan ends.
